Individual digipack

For some reason it has been extremely hard to save the photos edited on adobe photoshop, therefore i have resorted to taking pictures with my camera, which is not as good quality as the original. I have also unfortunatly lost my back cover and poster. Which i regret massivly and is something i would definatly never do again and take extra care of if repeated.

The Wanted - How they market themselves

With the rise of technology, it is making it easier for bands such as 'The Wanted' to promote themselves. Before technology and the internet were invented artist would market themselves by touring the country, going on radio stations and putting posters up on the street. However with the internet and social networking sites such as facebook and twitter, word gets around about the artist or band very quickly.

The Wanted are up to date with the latest technology. Examples are along the lines of their youtube account. On the band's youtube account people can can access and listen to their songs and give them personal feedback. However, their videos are not just their songs, you can also find interviews with different band members/ the band together, you can access backstage clips and gossip, this way fans can get to know the group better, and feel as though they know the band. The theme on the page is personalised this is the same theme as the one on their website, this way it is easier for the audience to recognize them. http://www.youtube.com/user/Thewantedmusic?ob=0&feature=results_main

Another popular website they use is twitter. With the band having a group account and individual accounts, it has made it easier for fans to follow what the group get up to daily. On these accounts they put up personal pictures, videos and information about tour dates etc. Like this, the group can not only show their fans what they get up to but also gain more fans by showing people a different side to them than the music. Twitter is another way the band can communicate with fans by responding to tweets, and it is another way of getting feedback, and get to know their fans that little bit more and see what they would like to see the band do in the future; this in my opinion is good as it can lead on to a positive word-of-mouth from the audience and spread the word of the band.

The band also have a facebook account, which has reached just over a million followers. They have the same things as on twitter with videos, pictures and information, however on their facebook page they also have their merchandise. Having more than one social networking site accounts it allows the band to reach out to different people with different interests, and yet again leads to a larger fan base which is what they are after. With each band member updating their pages it is another way of allowing the fans to get more engaged with the band and become even more into their music.
http://www.facebook.com/#!/TheWanted?sk=app_186599258079630

Along with the social network crowd, like any other band they also have their own website. On the website you have the choice of listening to their music, watching their videos, finding out when and where their tours are taking place. They also sell their merchandise and in more than one language; Which I think is important as the band are not limiting their target audience and shows that they are dedicated to their job trying to spread the word worldwide. Merchandising is also a great technique to promote the band as people buy things like t-shirts, stationary, dolls etc which creates another way of marketing through the audience as other people can see. http://thewantedmusic.com/home.

It is not only the band who promote themselves. The fans have also helped as much as possible by posting fan made videos on youtube, fan made facebook and twitter acounts and fan made blog pages. Yet again people are able to see pictures etc and comment on what they think of it. Being able to communicate and give your own opnion is important as it allows the audience to engage and spread the word. http://thewantedunofficial.blogspot.co.uk/

music video analysis - Here it Goes Again By OK GO

Here we go again is one of the first music video's to come from OK GO. The video is not overly complicated and there is no narritive for the viewer to get lost in. The video appears to be one single continuous take and is not broken in jump cuts or any editing whatsoever. The camera is held in the same position throughout the whole music video which follows the band doing what looks like a very well rehearsed dance routine on 8 different treadmills. The whole video took a total of seventeen attempts for it to be completed.

On average the video lasts about 3 to 4 minutes of just the band doing this routine. But because it is so simple and yet so un-relevant to the music lyrics, it is that that draws the audience in. This is probably due to the fact that it is so different to any other music video around. Now a days most videos are very similar in the fact that someone is singing and there always seems to be a narrative or it is a performance in a studio or a live performance. In this case however, it really intruiges the audience and makes them want to carry on watching. The video is very memorable. Even if it only has 4 people in it and the same setting, background, shot and costume all the way through, the whole concept of the music video highly effective and extremely captivating.
Making the video must have been very entertaining and it was most likely very cheap to make and produce, and at the same time very time consuming for the band as had to learn the routine and practice hard to get it right.

This music video is also very different to others, as there is no sign of sexual representation, intertextuality, different settings. I get the feeling that the band want to sell themselves as freewilled, a go with the flow band, what ever comes their way band. But at the same time, the fact that they put so much time and effort into making the music video and learning the dance routine shows that they are dedicated and determined people, which shows that they will work hard at anything thrown at them.

The video was choreographed by Trish Sie and directed by Sie and the band. The music video did very well and the band were even asked to perform the routine at the MTV music video awards. It has since been viewed over 10 million times on youtube.

Music Television

MTV is the world's most well known and oldest music television channel. The channel was launched on August 1st 1981. On the date of it's launch, before the first music video by The Buggles came on, the words "Ladies and Gentlemen, lets rock and roll" were spoken by the channel's founder, John Lack. At the beginning MTV's main success was due to the availability of low-cost programming in the form of music videos. this was also beneficial to the record companies aswell because it was a way of promoting their artists music, therefore were happy to give MTV cheap deals.

Music videos were constantly being shown, one after another. Clips would usually be repeated from time to time, however this would be according to a light, medium or heavy "rotation" schedule.

If a particular music video or genere of music (soft rock and other 'adult' music) did not attract the intended audience of mtv then it ended up going on vh1 (video hits 1), which is a second channel that mtv owns. This launched in 1985; the channel quickly gained its own audience - completely different to mtv's audience, and gained a reputation as 'video valium' for yuppies. Other than that, the channel has not had the same amount of success as mtv, and in some ways has no specific character; as a result vh1 was only half as successful as mtv. In the latter years vh1 slowly became successful, especially in 1994. By 1994 the channel began to play slightly harder music and showing "breaking" artists.
However, with all the competition put aside, both vh1 and mtv are now by far the most successful music channels in America to date. Many other competing channels have since fallen by the wayside.

Music video channels have become part an integral of our lives. With different mtv channels starting globally it has made it one of the biggest companies in the world. With channels in Asia, MTV Europe, MTV Latino and many more. MTV has had major changes in entertainment and the industry. By merging music with television in a new way, it has transformed both industry leading them both to big futures.

the history of music video's part 3 - goodwin - star image

American bands such as The Monkees, tried to make their music video as charismatic as possible using surrealism, wacky comedy, and action along with a performance - all typical of music video form today.

As times changed so were the bands performing on these television shows. 1970 was when serious rock became popular and rock gained slots on TV. For example 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' - 1971 and films emerged which then made the use of pop and rock artists eg Saturday Night Fever 1977.

With all the promo clips made to tie in with TV shows. AOR - dominating on radio in USA - it made it harder for pop singles to break through. Cable television was quickly becoming very popular, not generating sufficient income to pay for its own programming.

With all of these factors put together, Music Television was born.

the history of music video's part 2 - goodwin

Other antecedents of music videos included musical feature films such as 'The Jazz Singer' - released in 1927. This carried on to musicals of MGM of the 40s onto the rock n roll movie era of the 50s and 60s; for example: famous films such as 'The girl can't help it' (1956), Jailhouse Rock (Elvis Presley 1957) and British films sucha as the classic 'Summer Holiday' of 1962 with Cliff Richard.

These 'rock films' soon merged with documentary and alternative stylistic devices. An example of this would be The Beatles 'A Hard Days Night' in 1964. However in attempt to attract a new, young and fresh audience (teenage audience) TV coverage of music was eventually introduced; with programmes such as 'Top Of The Pops'and 'Ready Steady' which aired in the mid-60s in the UK. These programmes were aired weekly, and soon everyone in the country began to love the idea of it, and the need to have musical acts on the tv every week became very high. This led to the creation of short promo films which were often used in place of studio appearance when acts were not available; for example, the films 'Penny Lane' and 'Strawberry Fields Forever' by the Beatles were made specifically for this reason. A shift from being a tourung band to a studio based band was greatly visible - artists/bands such as The Kinks, Stones and The Who were also in similar situation.

the history of music video's part 1 - goodwin

The relationship between music tracks and visual material dates back to the 1920s in Germany and the 1930s in America. Oscar Fischinger, for exampmle, was an experimental film maker using abstracts and visual interpretations, some of his famous works are along the lines of Kompsition in Blau (made in 1935) and Fantasia (in 1939) these famous films were early examples of music videos using classical music in the background.
Most of the time the song would be advertised at the end of the video with a title saying "get it at your local store".

Most music videos were known as 'shorties' (short films) this demonstrated talents of singers such as Billie Talent & Bing Crosby, these would usually be played on the 'panoram' (a video jukebox) in juke joints and bars around 1939-1946. These were quite heavy and small screens on the juke boxes - at the time there was very minimal censorship therefore the clips shown in the juke joints and bars were very daring sexually and politically.

This was soon followed by the Scopitone in the 60s in France. The first Scopitones were made in France in 1960, the craze soon spread throughout Europe and in particular West Germany and England, before heading over to the United States around mid-1964. By the late 1960s, the craze had died down and they were soon gone. The scopitone had choice built in, including films in colour, individual selection and play and rewind. On one jukebox there would be around 36 films - with mainly song and dance performances, which were not of high quality and usually shot on stage or outdoors. A lot of the music videos had very explicit and flashy images of women.
In the USA there were around 1000 of these machines installed by mid-1965. Films produced in the USA spent a lot of money in making films as provocative as they could get by making fantasy sets and using highly suggestive sexual dance routines - in fact these films bordered on the pornographic. The Scopitone and the panoram was in some ways the ancestor of todays music videos. The Scopitone died out and was gone when tv arrived.

music video analysis - Millions - Those Girls

Millions is an indie/ underground band from Brisbane Australia, the band are not very well known with only two songs: their first 'Guru' and their second being 'Those Girls' - with Those Girls being their first music video.

The music video of 'Those Girls' is very fast tempo and full of action, with people dancing throughout so the viewers do not switch off and it keeps you intruiged and entertained. The video starts off with it cutting to the beat of the music with the girls also moving/dancing along to the beat this also makes it quite lively and fun. The band Millions are also playing a set which is quite a stereotypical look for an indie band - having a performance in a music video.

From the mise-en-scene you can tell that the video is set in the 1960's hence why the whole video is in black and white, which gives it a vintage feel. However this could also make you wonder if something dark or bad will happen later on, even though people are seen very happy. It is also evident that it is set in the 1960s by the costume - which is very original, full of bold colours, and high neck clothing. The band also have a typical 1960's as they are seen wearing suits and skinny ties and polo necks, this also gives the video a Beatles/Kinks feel to it. The make-up is also a good representation of the 60's as it is very bold and thick, along with the hair and style of dancing - quite are both unique. At 0:58 you see an iconic style of dancing for this era, the shot is divided into three sections with three girls dancing. With the lyrics being "you know those girls" the shot illustrates these lyrics as does the rest of the video. This is also evidence of intertextuality, as the costume and setting of the music video reminds me of television programmes of the 60s such as the avengers and the saint.

At times in the music video when the tempo is fast the action is slow - there is no syncronisation between the tempo and the movement of everyone else apart from the band playing. However when the chorus comes up everyone is dancing along with the band and the movement therefore is syncronised with the tempo.

The story line is based on a party, a party full of girls, the only guys visible are the band performing. This automatically gives the women a more dominant role in the music video. From time to time you see the back of a girl smoking a cigarette, one could question whether she is an outsider, a threat to the party or just a very mysterious woman. Later on she makes her entrance and stirs up all the trouble by making out that people have been stealing things from others; this imidiatly casues fights throughout the room between the girls. This could show a different side to women a more daring side to them, and in a way turns the role in gender as it is usually the men who cause the trouble and the men who would do such things. Also the fact that the girls all started fighting seems very unlady like, especially seeing as near the end it got very physical.

The video ends with the woman looking pleased with her doings and walking off as though nothing had happened. The video in general is narrative based however it has a good mixture between narative and performance.

It seems as though the band want to sell themselves as fun people and a little edgy with a music video set in the 60s. With this being their first music video it feels as though the band and their record label want to sell them as fun loving people and at the same time people dedicated to their music as they are seen performing throughout the whole music video.

Lyric Analysis of new song choice.

Moon and Moon by Bat For Lashes

Lover, when you don't lay with me
I'm a huntress for a husband lost at sea
If I had you here
Braid our hair together
I'd be boy and you'd be girl
Beautiful

You imidiatly get the feeling that it's a one way relationship, as though the woman does not have any more control over the relationship. The line where it says "im a huntress for a husband lost at sea" gives me a feeling that he may disapear from time to time, she doesnt know where he has gone and tries to keep it together. The last line of the verse is like she wants a more dominant role in the relationship as it is usually the man who is the more dominant one in a relationship, so it is as if she wants to take over.

Calling moon and moon
Shoot that big bad hand
It'll drag me to your door
And I won't see you no more

When this wild world
Is a big bad hand
Pushing on my back
Do you understand?
When I get home
Been in the jungle
Where's my bear to lick me clean?
Feed my soul milk and honey

Calling moon and moon
Shoot that big bad hand
It'll drag me to your door
And I won't see you no more

I won't see you no more

It comes across as though throughout the song she wants her partner to love, protect and comfort and also respect her. She wants him to start acting like a partner, she wants him to be there for her - the same way she would be there for him. The whole song gives out a very personal touch.

Individual Digipack

Throughout the whole of today my group and i focused on finishing all of the shooting for our music video. During this time we also took photo's for our individual digipack. We each took pictures of Kim using our own individual ideas taking pictures of how we imagined the album cover for Elena May to look like. Taking pictures from a range of angles and positions for my digipack i am pleased with the outcome.

Editing

Over the past week my group and i have been coming in early and during our frees to edit our music video. Yesterday myself and Eva spent a lesson editing and found it very productive filling up most of the timeline - however could not finish it as we did not have all the footage with us. Today on the other hand, Kim and i managed to get a great deal done. We were amased at how quick and easy it was to edit and now have high hopes for the final piece. Whilst editing and looking back at our footage we were very happy with the outcome and quality of the shots shot from Ev's iPhone, if there was a tri pod for iPhone's we all agreed in saying that we would have definitly used the phone throughout the whole process of filming the video. However, having said that, i do believe that even the sony cameras that the media department provided us were just as good in producing good quality pictures. We hope to finish all editing by tomorrow.

Filming the last shots for the Music Video

Today myself and my group went up to the art department to use the school's dark room to shoot the final pieces of our music video. The shots were of Kim singing as we did not have any of her singing the new song (so far the music video is only silent shots). Therefore with the footage we filmed today we would be able to fill up the whole timeline of the music video and bring a little more life to it.

Whilst filming we used a white background to brighten the mood of the video as so far what we have created is quite a sad and depressing video due to the song. We decided not to use a black bacground as it would make the video even more sad; i felt that with a white background along with Kim singing it would lift the viewers spirits more.
We spent about an hour in total, shooting from all possible angles to get the perfect picture. The faacilities provided also helped, with professional lights which really did help us a lot.

Whilst filming i was taking pictures to upload as evidence of our work, along with video's of practices and the actual clip which we would use in the final edit.

Once we had finished filming we filmed an evaluation of the session we had just finished on Eva's phone, with each one of us giving our thoughts abut the video and the make up used and the facilities provided for us.

Rough Trade Records

Rough Trade Records is an independent record label based in London. It was founded by Geoff Travis in 1978. Travis opened a record shop off Ladbroke Grove - after successfully promoting and selling records by punk and early post punk bands such as Buzzcocks and Desperate Bicycles he began to manage and distribute acts; which is when he began the label. 1978, the shop began organising a record distribution network, dubbed "The Cartel", in collaboration with other independent record stores in the UK.
Interest and investment of major labels in the indie scene in the UK in the late 1980s, and overtrading on behalf of Rough Trade's distribution side, led the company to cash flow problems, and eventually bankruptcy - forcing the label into receivership. However, soon after in 2000, Travis brought the label back with Jeanette Lee, in which it was independently owned with minority partners Sanctuary Records, as a part of the Zomba Group. The label's comeback saw it intoducing new bands and finding success with The Libertines, The Strokes and Anthony and the Johnsons. However in 2002 BMG bought out the business; and yet again in July 2007 Sanctuary Records then sold Rough Trade to the Beggars Group making Rough Trade independent once again. Since the record label got back into shape it has produced many famous bands along the likes of 'Babyshambles' and 'Belle and Sebastian' and as mentioned before 'The Libertines' and 'The Strokes'.
Being a small company to begin with to getting where they are now with such big bands is a huge achievement, especially for someone who started out with a record shop down in Ladbroke Grove.

Intertextuality in our music video

For our music video to be that bit more interesting we also looked into a way to include intertextuality. We chose to include this through the clothes and make up Kim would be wearing. We looked at iconic times and people and in particular things that set them apart from others. We looked at the era of the 40s-50s, focusing on iconic people such as Dita Von Teese. However realising it would be very difficult to do such a thing we relaxed the theme a little and went for the 70s and focused on Twiggy and her doe eye make up. Using this idea we wanted to bring out a British and iconic look for the artist, something original and unexpected.

Kim went and tried out the idea, however the testing failed as the make up was very difficult to put on and take off, and as a group we felt that if we did carry on using that idea it would not look high standard and in a way look a little bit silly. Having said that we decided to stick to a subtle 50s style. For example Marilyn Monroe in the film "Gentlemen prefer Blondes" which is very subtle but at the same time very stylish and classy, which is the look we are after.

Planning of Digipack

A while back my group and i started to create our digipack, which is the album artwork and information that is provided inside. The first thing we did was come up with a possible name for our artist and with all our individual ideas collaborated we came to an agreement on ______. Along with this we also planned out our ideal image for our artist. Once we had a good, solid idea we wasted no time in testing our idea and went up to the art department's dark room and did a photoshoot with the artist (Kim).
The aquipment given to us was a bonus, as we had professional lights to work with to get the perfect image. We spent a good amount of time, carefully taking the pictures from different angles so we had a wide range to choose from. We used a range of angles and closeness so that we can work with the images in different ways using adobe photoshop.
After the photoshoot, we went on to use adobe photoshop and experiment with the images. One of the ideas we had was to layer over three images that are similar but not the same, so that we can imitate movement.

Tomorrow we are hopefully going to take photos for our individual digipack, and hopefully it will turn out as planned!

Website Analysis - Foster the People

Like any other band's website, the Foster The People website is very good for anyone wishing to obtain information about the band. When you first go on the website, the first thing you notice is the big, bold heading "foster the people" which instantly catches the viewers attention. Above this are the standard links to different pages such as 'news, shows, music, photos, videos, journal and store'. The next thing you notice is key information for the fans, for example the latest news and their tour dates.

The colour sheme of the website is very simple with a plain white background and black/grey headings - nothing too in your face, however nothing to attract the viewer. This in my opinion suggests that the band are not out to shock, they do not want to be one of those bands who are very load/bold, they seem very low key and do not want too much fuss.

Throughout the website there is lack of promotion or advertisement for the band. To start off, there isn't even a picture of the band as you enter the site as it is the album art which is cartoon like; you have to search your way through the website to get a glimpse of the band. But when you do there are it is mainly in black and white (so you do not get a clear image of them) hardly any close-up photos of the band and 'no-frills'.
With all this said, it seems to me that the band do not want to be known by their image but solely on thier music (which shows their dedication to their job) as their identity is hidden most of the time, and the fact that there is the option for music to be played in the background.

The website seems to target only their fans - if you don't know who they are then this website will not offer you a history of the band. Along with all this, there are no interactive facilities, no way of getting intrueged by the band.

Album Cover Analysis 5

The Kooks - Inside in, Inside out

The typography of this album cover is very bold and stands out a lot with the bright red and black colours and bold font. The title along with the rest of the album cover is quite simple, which suggests that the band is very simplistic. This goes on to show that they are not very mainstream or that they are not mainstream at all, as they are not going for the in your face look. This can also be seen by the fact that none of the band members are looking at the camera posing, but focusing on their music instead, therefore indicating dedication and devotion to their music (seen through all the instruments shown in the picture). They want their fans to know that music is all they care about and that they love sharing it. This shows how hard working they are.

Unlike the typography, the background is not very bold, but pleasing to the eye. This way the band blend in with the background which gives it a nice touch, and the audience at the same time can focus on the main image.
Throughout, the main colours of the album are red, black and white. As mentioned before the red font helps the album name stand out against the white background. The contrast between the red and black font draws the fans' attention to both the album name but also the band's name.

The whole 'indie' look is portrayed through the band sitting around playing their guitars, and their clothing - skinny jeans and the tops they are wearing - the stereotypical look for an indie band.

Storyboards for new song

Changing song/New Song

About two weeks ago myself and my group decided to change our song due to the fact that we did not feel the song we had would get us a good mark and we not did not feel 100% happy with what we were creating. At first i thought changing our song 3 weeks before the deadline was a very big risk as we would be left with very limited time to film new footage; however over looking our previous song and the work we had completed so far i could understand why the rest of the group were keen to change the song.

Our new choice of song is by Bat for Lashes called Moon and Moon. Kimberley has drawn the storyboard which we all are comfortable with. The story board focuses predominantly on narrative rather than performance, i find that this will give the music video more life and will captivate the audience more, make them want to carry on watching. The narrative aspect also fits in well with the slow tempo and solitary feel of the song.

The narrative focus' on a girl waiting for someone to come home. Initially you assume it is her boyfriend, however it is left ambiguous, the male character is introduced when he comes home and is greeted warmly by the girl. The latter part of the video is the couple together having a lovely time and then lastly as he leaves, she returns to a state of solitude and lovingness. With this idea, my group and i really wanted to capture how someone can feel so alone and dependant on another person. The previous song - we did not have a solid narrative, therefore changing the song and the storyboard gave us the oppurtunity to create a new, interesting narrative that we were all comfortable and more certain with.

The colour scheme will be muted and dark colours, reflected to cold, lonely feel of the music video. The props will be very minimal as too many props and objects would confuse the audience and would not fit in with the video.

Seeing as we have little time to complete this, we have decided to still use certain cut aways from the original video where kim is not singing as it fits perfectly well with the new song. Filming wise, Kim and Iva filmed at Iva's house last weekend, we now have all the footage needed s all that is left is for us as a group to edit and make the video as good as possible!

Now we have all the footage completed and we have already begun editing using previous footage from the previous song where kim is not singing, we now have little left to edit. Hopefully it will turn out as good as we hoped it would!

We Wont Run Lyrics

Pages turning, lights are burning,
See what you could not see.
As plain as the day, the night makes you pay,
For what was hidden underneath.

Longing to leave, but begging to feel,
That something will make you stay.
You gotta believe, that this all leads,
To somewhere we've never been.

We won't run, we can fight,
All that keeps us up at night.
There is far, to go now,
Let's not waste a minute more, in denial.

But I always thought, you knew yourself
Better than anyone.
But the season was lost
When you started listening, to everyone else.

Cast in this devil, I've got the metal,
The means to make things right.
Tired of guilt, tired of being sorry,
Haven't we suffered enough?

We won't run, we can fight,
All that keeps us up at night.
There is far
To go now,
Let's not waste a minute more. (2x)

But oh,
That our eyes
Will be open. (4x)

We won't run, we can fight,
All that keeps us up at night.
There is far, to go now,
Let's not waste a minute more.

We won't fear, we can fight,
All that we can bring to light.
There is far, to go now,
Let's not waste a minute more.

We won't run, we can fight,
All that keeps us up at night.
There is far, to go now,
Let's not waste a minute more.

Of our lives,
Our lives (2x)
Our lives.

The lyrics to we wont run, are very meaningful and deep. it seems to me that this song means a lot to the artist, as though she went through a tough break up from a relationship. the lyrics "we wont run" could suggest that she doesnt want to run away from any thing, that she isn't afraid of the pain the break up might cause. It comes across that it is the man who is the one who left not the woman singing the song.

"Longing to leave, but begging to feel,
That something will make you stay.
You gotta believe, that this all leads,
To somewhere we've never been."

These lyrics could suggest that she doesnt want him to leave and at the same time wants there to be something that might possibly make him stay.

We won't run, we can fight,
All that keeps us up at night.

No matter how much they fight, he shouldnt leave, and she wont leave him, even if it keeps them up all night, as she believes that their relationship can work through the situation they are in and is more than what they have now.
